If your child has difficulty saying certain sounds, replaces sounds, has difficulty saying words, or is difficult to understand, they may have a speech sound disorder.

We can help!

What are the different types of pediatric speech sound disorders?

Articulation

Articulation disorders refer to difficulty producing individual speech sounds. This may be a substitution of one sound for another (e.g. saying “wabbit” for “rabbit”) or the distortion of a sound (e.g. frontal or lateral lisps). Most children can produce all speech sounds by the age of 5.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a rare motor based speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to speak. The child may know what they want to say, however they have difficulty planning and programming the message from the brain to the mouth to communicate efficiently. This is not a result of muscle weakness. CAS is diagnosed by a trained speech-language pathologist and is not a medical condition.

Phonology

Phonological disorders refer to consistent rule-based error patterns that can affect one or more sounds. For example, children with the phonological pattern of “cluster reduction” may delete one of the sounds in a consonant cluster (e.g. saying “mile” instead of “smile” or “fake” instead of “flake”). It can be common for young children who are starting to speak to use phonological patterns to simplify their speech. If a child continues to demonstrate the use of phonological patterns past the expected age, he or she may have a phonological disorder.

Other

Speech sound disorders may also be due to hearing loss, structural differences (cleft lip/palate), or neurological differences (dysarthria).
